Meeting notes released through Washington County’s public records portal show officials discussed a $2-per-bed payment model alongside hundreds of millions in local infrastructure demands.
Washington County needs to make an effort to vote these guys out and vote in someone who will give constituents a voice and actually know how to spell litigation. 🙄
You folks at Project Salt Box are true patriots. Thank you so much for your diligence in researching and reporting this. You are true public servants. It is so important for the public to know the shady dealings behind everything ICE does.
Excellent information here! I'm thinking that you guys are getting close to knowing enough about how the detention system is going to work, including financially and organizationally, that it might be time to get a major news outlet to bring it to the attention of the broader public. CNN, PBS, MSNOW, Politico kind of collaboration? Before the Midterm voting starts. It just kills me that the government is willing to put this much effort into spending my taxes on this project but not for sheltering the currently or nearly homeless.
A story that is being overlooked in all of this is the number of multi-million dollar contracts DHS is handing out to small, very rural communities where there are no jobs, no factories, and no investments. The government is providing millions upon millions of our tax dollars to jails and prisons to detain undocumented immigrants in these facilities. These contracts are now the main source of income for these communities, and although advocates are pushing back, the reality is that these communities have nothing to replace those contracts with. In other words, they are now dependent on these DHS contracts. Pennsylvania is a good example…Lewisburg Prison.
Michael, I'm sure you saw the story about ICE thugs invading Ovenbird Bakery in Baltimore a few days ago:
'Staff shaken after ICE pursuit leads agents into Ovenbird Bakery in Highlandtown
. . . Kyle said the agents were “jacked up” from the pursuit, and employees witnessed one agent place his hand on his gun and loosen it in his holster while questioning them.'
This is regarding NPR’s program 1A which airs on radio each weekday. I was listening to 1A today when Jenn White, the program’s moderator, announced that tomorrow’s program would be discussing proposed DHS warehouse detention camps. Jenn is inviting people to email/call in regarding their experiences with these warehouses, and what people are doing, especially if a proposed DHS warehouse camp is in their neighborhood.
Hopefully, you or representatives from your group will be able to get through to her. Jenn plays recorded messages and reads emails on air.
Program info: Your voice is a crucial part of 1A. Throughout the show, we feature comments from listeners who call or write to us. If you’re listening to the show and want to join the conversation, then by all means:
Try our app, VoxPop. You can get it on the App Store or Google Play.
If you want to know what we’re planning, our shows page is updated daily, or you can text 1A to +1 (202) 933-5134 to get a few messages a week on what we’re planning (standard message rates may apply, and you can text STOP any time to end the messages). If you have something to say about an upcoming topic, send us a text or give us a call.
We’re also always looking for ideas for shows. If you have an idea, or even if you just have a question you’d like 1A to try to answer, please let us know. But, before you send it, please keep in mind that we get a ton of pitches. To make yours stand out…
Familiarize yourself with the show: We’ve covered everything from aliens to how to make six figures without a college degree, and we’re really interested in shows that can explain something about the world through civil discourse. One example of a listener-suggested show is our hour on gerrymandering.
Condense! 1A topics generally last an hour, which feels like a second in the studio. The best pitches and questions to us are brief — they fit into one sentence. (If you need some inspiration for sharpening your prose, our interview with legendary wordsmith Sir Harold Evans might help)
THANK YOU for your diligent reporting. Such important work. Helps keep the eyes open. Much appreciated.
Great sleuthing!! This could be any county in Maryland whose city or county council is ICE friendly and willing to be “bribed”.
Washington County needs to make an effort to vote these guys out and vote in someone who will give constituents a voice and actually know how to spell litigation. 🙄
Amen

What a waste of our tax dollars.
So is this for the benefit of the corporations. What a waste of money

Now sue them for damages! Torture Negligence!
Thank you, Project Salt Box for the critical work you are doing.
