"Arbeit macht frei" vibes...

I don't really see any other explanation for how much money and infrastructure is going into this system: slave labor. Apparently lots of money to be made by enslaving people and exploiting them for free labor.

Shane Bauer's book, American Prison gives the history of prison slave labor as well as the history of prison privatization. It's not dry at all, and I'd recommend it to anyone concerned about how in hell we got here.

Thank you, I will definitely check it out. 13th amendment and what not. We have just legalized slavery for "criminals." And now the task is to redefine who/what is "criminal" to apply it as broadly as possible. I guess immigrants were next after black folks. Disgusting. There are economic reasons underpinning all of this - someone (or many) is set to profit greatly.

Horrifying. Thank God it's paused for now in these 2 places. Keep up the reporting

My 2 friends who were in Joe Corley, a GEO Group det'n ctr in TX actually liked the work program; conditions at Corley are SO depressing, that getting to take the trash outside on the night time kitchen shift was the ONE time you got to see the sky and maybe some stars. Obv I'm not defending slave labor, just mentioning how Yessica and Douglas described it.

This is not a “detention center.” It is a concentration camp. It is a concentration camp. It is a concentration camp.

Where am I living? This is NOT the United States of America.
