Eleven days after telling a federal judge it would sell the $129 million warehouse, the department says it is again considering retrofitting the building to hold up to 1,500 detainees.
These changes in direction are meant to distract us from the way ICE is secretly trying to contract with existing facilitues that are aready up and running as detention centers in areas where GEO Group is running detention centers with contracts expiring between Aug and Oct this year. Contracting with the existing facilities removes that little annoyance of having to perform and submit environmental impact studies along with construction plans to local boards for public comment. It's either that or they just have incompetent management that can't make up it's mind. Or maybe both are true.
This judge should rule against ICE converting the warehouse.
I too live close to Roxbury. After seeing what is going on (or lack of seeing as state officials have been denied entry) in Delaney Hall, Mikey needs to find a way to stop this insanity. Not only the human rights violations that will almost certainly occur, the environmental damage & resources used will take an enormous toll on all of us financially.
Trump's DHS cannot be trusted. It's plain to see that they lied through their teeth when they said they would sell the facility. They obviously never had that intention, and the judge needs to issue an order.
It's what's called a feint, or a fake out.
To anyone who is thinking of cooperating with ICE or DHS, remember that when this hateful regime is finally dismantled, we will still be here, and your rich protectors will be gone.
This is the problem with State AG's allowing DHS to play Rope De Dope with the status of the lawsuits. Stalling out basic meetings to finalize the stipulations, getting multiple extensions and then "poof" they change their minds. AG's are treating DHS like a logical, legitimate negotiating partner when they have been acting in bad faith from the moment these warehouses were bought. Same in MI, where the AG's office has still never met with DHS, judge expresses concerns, and then they give DHS 60 days to continue to run out their options clock.
Was it about stock purchases? Driving down the price and then buying more low, and then renewing a push for more detention centers to drive up the price again?

I guess for them these are just abstractions - a box full of bodies is worth more than an empty one, right? Or?
Thank you for reporting this and doing it so dispassionately.
Thank you once again, Project Saltbox, you all are heroic public servants.Thank you for the great work you are doing.
Voter intimidation and renewed immigration crackdowns leading up to midterms. #voteearly

All they do is lie. They all need to be held accountable and be gone. Vote blue all the way.

This is the new pattern, yes? Back off until the spotlight subsides and then accelerate detentions, and renew the efforts in the dark.
True. I wish people would wake tf up!
